Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Therapy

I can’t turn off my brain - make it stop!

Do you find yourself stuck in never-ending thought loops?

The experience of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) can be unbearable at times. Many people try everything they can to control their thoughts, with limited success. Typically, even finding temporary relief is just that - temporary. The thoughts and urges often come flooding back, because they do not have an “off” switch.

The topics OCD tends to fixate on are things which matter deeply to the person affected, which makes it feel even more compelling to put energy into the thought loop. It can feel very circular, and without proper professional help, can cause people to feel very stuck in their own mind.

If you have OCD, you may have significant difficulty pushing away or ignoring intrusive thoughts. You may often get stuck in circular thought patterns and engage in related compulsions, or behaviors, to attempt to reduce the anxiety associated with these thought cycles.

Do you find yourself driven by obsessions and related behavioral compulsions?

OCD is marked by an intolerance of uncertainty. Typically, someone experiencing OCD is seeking certainty, otherwise known as “knowing for sure.” The thoughts, or obsessions, create doubt in an area where it feels intolerable; thus, the compulsion is any behavior you might use to try to “know for sure” and soothe the doubt. Unfortunately, with an uncertain world, this becomes a neverending cycle.

OCD is often presented in very specific ways in the media. However, there are many other types of OCD, which may include:

  • Intrusive thoughts or images

  • Observable compulsions to attempt to neutralize the intrusive thought

  • Exploring the meaning behind an intrusive thought or image, and spending excessive time doing so

  • Constant checking or double-checking

  • Worry about your moral value due to having these thoughts

  • Concern about your identity and what it might say about you

  • Mental reviewing (Did I or did I not do that thing? Did that person seem this way/that way in our interaction? What do I remember from that experience exactly?)

  • Searching for the "right" answer in your mind

  • Hoarding

  • Thoughts that you might be harmed

  • Thoughts that you might cause others harm

Do your thoughts and actions feel completely out of your control?

Do you ever just want to be able to shut off your brain? OCD can be exhausting, worrying and the follow-up behavior to seek certainty, which never seems to be enough. You might feel you have done enough research, reassurance seeking, and mental reviewing to come to peace with the current topic stuck in your mind, which brings a real sense of relief. However, have you noticed that the relief only lasts until there is a new intrusive thought? A new, “what if”? The relief cannot last, because it is never enough. In OCD, it truly never is enough to fully convince you of certainty.

Thus, OCD could be described as having an allergy to uncertainty. It typically causes a very big, immediate response when uncertainty surrounds a topic that is of importance to you. Because your brain cannot tolerate the uncertainty, the certainty-seeking process begins, and then you are once again caught in the never-ending thought loop.

We know it is not easy to take the first step toward change, particularly when it is hard to even see what the path to healing may look like. We know this is scary. The thoughts feel insurmountable. But we are here to walk with you, show you the path, and help you achieve true change.

Here’s the good news. OCD is very treatable. You are in the right place. We are OCD specialists, and we can help!

At SCPS, our team has extensive training in helping patients conquer their OCD. We are trained in Exposure and Response Prevention, or ERP, (Hyperlink to ERP Service page.) which is the gold standard treatment for OCD. We also include families or significant others in treatment for your OCD, as needed. If you think you may have OCD, please reach out. We are here to help.

What To Expect

  • The first step: Reach out to us for a complimentary screening call to determine how we can help, and who is the best-fit therapist for your needs.

  • Then: We will then set you up with a full assessment and intake visit, where we get to know you, learn details about your OCD and the impact on your daily life, understand your history and background, and more. At the end of this visit, we are working on setting goals with you, educating you on OCD and ERP treatment, giving you a sense of what ongoing therapy will look like, and recommending a starting point to begin treatment for your OCD.

  • Next: We typically start with weekly meetings, though this depends on the severity of your OCD and how much it is holding you back in your life. In some cases, we may recommend more frequent appointments to start and really lay a good foundation to begin to see progress. This is always determined in collaboration with you, attuned to your goals, urgency, and dependent on what works for you. We will continue to collaborate with you, create step-by-step plans to work on between sessions, and ensure we are making meaningful, noticeable progress toward reducing OCD’s interference in your life.

  • Ongoing: We continuously assess how things are going, review your progress, and adjust as needed so we continue to see success in conquering your OCD.

Why work with us?

We have years of experience treating OCD in clients of all ages. OCD often goes undiagnosed for many years before a therapist makes a proper diagnosis, and it is not unusual for us to be the first therapist to diagnose OCD, even in someone who has been in therapy before. We have finely tuned diagnostic skills to be very confident in our ability to know OCD when we see it. Then, we are extensively trained in ERP and have countless success stories of clients getting better, keeping their OCD at bay, and graduating treatment. We continuously stay up to date on the most current OCD treatments, and our founder and director, Dr. Bridgette Atallah, is a member of the International OCD Foundation. Dr. Atallah trains every staff member herself to ensure the most effective, comprehensive OCD care.

OCD Therapy FAQs

What does treatment look like?

Treatment is customized to every client’s specific needs and goals. We first establish which parts of OCD are causing the most pain. Then, we create a structured plan based on a hierarchy, so that we choose challenges that feel doable as we learn to stand up to your OCD. This will include learning to tolerate uncertainty around the identified goal, engage in exposures (facing the feared topic) in small steps, and learning to resist the compulsions and urges that come with this process.

Is treatment for OCD hard?

ERP can be challenging, but it is also highly effective. It takes courage to learn to face uncertainty and doubt; however, we are there to help you through it every step of the way. Because this treatment is very structured, it is easier to identify progress and it is incredibly rewarding when you feel yourself conquering your OCD. The progress is what will keep your motivation high.

What does success look like after treatment for OCD?

The best way our clients have described success is with the word “freedom.” It is not that their obsessive thoughts never pop into their head; it is that they know what to do when it happens. Rather than automatically diving into the same OCD cycle that has always occurred, our clients are able to identify OCD, make a conscious choice to disengage from the cycle, and thus OCD’s grip over your life loosens.

How long does it take?

OCD treatment length varies widely. Some clients say that they feel better after just a few sessions, and we do find that even simply understanding what OCD is and the general rationale for how to approach it can be quite helpful in cases of mild OCD. For moderate or severe OCD, particularly if it has gone on for years without treatment, it can take longer to see results. The good news is that you have a say in this! The more active a participant you are in the treatment (reading, engaging in exposures, putting energy into resisting the OCD), the faster the OCD tends to respond.

Let’s imagine a world where a disturbing thought pops into your head, but instead of getting lost in the old OCD cycle, there is another way. Imagine you acknowledge what the thought is, and then you are able to let it go, and move on with whatever else you were doing at the moment. This does not have to be imaginary. Let us help you find that freedom for yourself.

We have helped countless individuals of all ages conquer their OCD, and achieve freedom from the cycle of obsessions and compulsions. You can be next. We are here to help.
