First appointment

In the first visit, we gather more details about your life - what's brought you in to see us, what your life looks like, and what you're hoping will change in our work together. In the first visit you can expect:

  • Beginning to map out how things have been going, and where we can intervene to make meaningful, lasting change - as soon as the very first visit.
  • Setting preliminary goals
  • Leaving the appointment with any initial recommendations we have, and ideally even an action plan to get started right away

After the first visit

We typically recommend weekly visits to start, in order to lay a solid foundation and ensure we see initial progress more quickly. In our regular therapy sessions, you can expect:

  • A blend of sharing of your experiences/feedback and your therapist's expertise in action-oriented coping plans.
  • Side by side collaboration with you to create a fully custom path to get you feeling better.
  • Concrete ways to measure if things are improving, and problem-solving when we hit barriers.

How long will therapy take?

How long therapy takes varies from person to person. CBT is typically short-term and goal-focused. Many clients see meaningful progress in 8-20 sessions. There are many things that factor into therapy duration, such as:

  • Consistency of attendance and homework between sessions
  • Readiness for change and engagement in the process
  • Whether the goals are very focused on one specific problem, or broader goals focused on problems that transcend various areas of life

Therapy is collaborative-we'll regularly review progress and adjust the plan as needed. The goal is always effective, efficient support.

As we see progress over time, we can reduce session frequency, which helps us to ensure that your progress is sustained, even without ongoing therapy. CBT is designed to be a shorter-term therapy, and our desire is for you to successfully reach your goals and graduate therapy!
